The Great North Road, Convict Trail

A bushwalk with difference - walk through Sydney’s convict history.

When: During daylight hours

Where: Park in the park at Wisemans Ferry, walk onto the Ferry to cross the river and walk up to the start of the Convict Trail.

The Convict Trail takes you along the Old Great North Road, an amazing feat of engineering that was built by convicts to link Sydney with the Hunter Region, back in the 1830’s. History is brought to life during the walk by the many information panels along the way, containing a mixture of factual information and engaging stories about the lives of convicts. It feels like a walk through an open air museum, rather than just your usual bushwalk.

There are different ways of doing this trail - you can opt to walk up the Convict Trail and back, or you can choose to make a loop by continuing onto Finchs Line Trail. The first option is just under 4km’s in total, with the second option being a 10.3km loop.

Parking is very limited at the start of the road, we suggest parking in the park at Wisemans Ferry and walking onto the Ferry to cross the river and walk up to the start of the Convict Trail. For more information about the Convict Trail, visit their website here
